The Quiet Woman

Romantic thriller about a woman who, yearning for a fresh start, takes over a pub (The Quiet Woman of the title). She discovers the pub has a history of being used as a base for smuggling and her past catches up with her when her criminal ex-husband turns up, seeking refuge. Think Brief Encounter with a measure of Whisky Galore and a slither of Brighton Rock.  A young Dora Bryan plays a barmaid.

The Star Inn on Sluice Lane, Norman’s Bay was used for the external scenes of The Quiet Woman pub. Waller’s Haven the waterway around Norman’s Bay also features heavily. Rye Harbour across the River Rother and one of the Martello Towers (no.28), and ‘The Mill on the Hill’, also appear. 

The film also features scenes set at Winchelsea Station which also appears in the film Small Town Story, a football set drama and one of the British Film Institute 75 Most Wanted list of missing British movies.
